Our Detroit Technical Center was added to Excel Engineering’s family in 2020, expanding our Midwest presence with a full-service facility in Van Buren Township. This ITAR-compliant lab is our go-to center for electrification, calibration, OBD, in-use testing, and driveline development across multiple fuel platforms.

Equipment & Capabilities
Excel Engineering’s Detroit Technical Center is a high-performance, ITAR-compliant testing facility equipped to handle advanced engine, emissions, and electrification development programs. With 11 total test cells—including four fully EPA 1065-compliant emissions cells—this facility is built for precision, flexibility, and speed.
With advanced instrumentation and experienced technicians, our Detroit location supports every phase of modern powertrain testing.
Key equipment and capabilities include:
- EPA 40 CFR 1065 emissions test cells (up to 600 kW)
- Transient motoring dynamometers (up to 460 kW)
- High-torque shear brake (14,000 lb-ft) for driveline testing
- Battery, hybrid, and EV drivetrain development systems
- Support for multiple fuel types: gasoline, diesel, CNG, LNG, alcohol, military fuels
- Rapid engine cool-down systems for reduced test cycle times
- Prototype machining and fabrication capabilities
- On-site pilot build support and part assembly
Sustainable Operations
Staff
Small Vehicle (Side-by-Side, Motorcycle)
We are proficient at running tests for a variety of small vehicles and powersports equipment, including electric versions. Our current facilities feature dual rolls for ATV and side-by-side testing and can accommodate testing to 40 CFR Part 86 guidelines or a customer-supplied test plan. We also provide MPGe and Battery SOH (State of Health) certification for these vehicles.
